  • Qatar donates 15 million dollars for the creation of the International Fund for Higher Education in Iraq

    23-06-2003 11:00 am Her Highness Sheika Mozah Bint Nasser al Missned, First Lady of Qatar and UNESCO Special Envoy for Basic and Higher Education and the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura signed “A Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between UNESCO and the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development concerning the establishment of an International Fund for Higher Education in Iraq”, on 23 June 2003 at UNESCO Headquarters.

    UNESCO and the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, chaired by H.H. Sheikha Mozah Bin Nasser al Missned, will administer the Fund.
    According the signed agreement the main objective is to “provide immediate and long-term assistance for the reconstruction of higher education in Iraq.”

    Within the framework of international efforts and UNESCO action to ensure the renewal of the Iraqi education system, the Fund should, initially, make it possible to identify universities in urgent need of assistance, which will be able subsequently to be extended to other universities.

    The signed agreement will cover the initial rehabilitation and reconstruction period of three years and will then be reviewed by the founding members and contributing States.

    As the first contributor, the State of Qatar decided to donate 15 million dollars. Several UNESCO Member States, including Japan, have already indicated their desire to make a financial contribution.

    The Director-General of UNESO Mr. Koïchiro Matsuura thanked H.H. Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser al Missned for her personal commitment to UNESCO as Special Envoy for Basic and Higher Education and for her active role in setting up the Fund.

    He welcomed the close cooperation established between UNESCO and the Foundation that she chairs and thanked the State of Qatar for its generous contribution, while expressing the hope that numerous countries would join this initiative

    The signature of “a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between UNESCO and the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development concerning the establishment of an International Fund for Higher Education in Iraq” took place during the opening session of the Meeting of Higher Education Partners (World Conference on Higher Education+5 ), on 23 June 2003 at UNESCO Headquarters.

    Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, Mr Cristovam Buarque, Minister of Education of Brazil and H.H. Sheikha Mozah Bin Nasser al Missned delivered thier address during the opening session.
