| Cultural diversity as a concern in public policy-making

Cultural diversity and the tangible and intangible heritage will be high on his agenda during this visit. |
Following a private audience with H.M. King Mohammed VI, Mr Matsuura will attend the opening on 17 March of the 107th Inter-Parliamentary Conference, which is being held in Marrakech from 17 to 23 March 2002.
On 18 March Mr Matsuura will deliver a speech in Essaouira on the occasion of a ceremony to mark the inscription of the Essaouira Medina on the World Heritage List. In the afternoon, after returning to Marrakech, he will present the UNESCO Cities for Peace Prizes to the mayors of the cities concerned, in the presence of the Moroccan Minister of Culture and Information, Mr Al-Achâari. Following this event, the proclamation of Jemaa el-Fna Square as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage will be confirmed. On this occasion, the Director-General will be stressing the particular importance he attaches to the promotion and protection of the intangible heritage.
On Tuesday, 19 March he will speak before the representatives of 142 national parliaments and other eminent persons present in Marrakech for the Inter-Parliamentary Conference. In his address, the Director-General will be drawing the parliamentarians’ attention to the role of cultural diversity and dialogue among civilizations in the necessary efforts to give a human face to globalization, inviting them to incorporate these two principles into the framing and implementation of public policies.
