Establishment of a new UNESCO Chair in Languages and Education

Este elemento no está disponible en Español.Está disponible actualmente en Inglés, Francés.

24-02-2002 - - On Monday, 25 February 2002, the Director-General, in the presence of the Spanish Ambassador, His Excellency Mr Francisco Villar, signed an agreement establishing a UNESCO Chair in Languages and Education at the Institute of Catalan Studies in Barcelona.

The main objectives of this Chair are to promote research, training, information and documentation activities in the field of languages and education and thereby to facilitate collaboration between researchers and teaching staff at the Institute and other institutions of the same type in other regions of the world.

This new Chair, established just a few days after the celebration at UNESCO Headquarters of International Mother Language Day, is the latest in a number of UNESCO Chairs already active in the field of linguistics and multilingual education. It will benefit in particular from the support and experience of the UNESCO Centre of Catalonia.

In all the various fields of study covered, the 445 UNESCO Chairs and the 55 UNITWIN Networks established throughout the world since 1992 contribute directly to the internationalization of higher education. They are an important means of transferring knowledge to developing countries and enable many universities to enhance their capacities.
