| Director-General closes Fifth Meeting of the Joint UNESCO/Palestinian Authority Committee
Este elemento no está disponible en Español.Está disponible actualmente en Inglés. 26-05-2003 - The Joint UNESCO/Palestinian Authority Committee concluded its two-day meeting at UNESCO Headquarters today, ending most successfully a series of intense and fruitful working sessions which addressed a number of issues of interest to both parties, including a review of achievements over the last three years, since the Joint Committee last met. |
The meeting was co-chaired by the Minister of Education and Higher Education of the Palestinian Authority, Dr Naim Abu Hommos and UNESCO's Deputy Director-General, Dr Marcio Barbosa, who led their respective Delegations, made up of specialists in UNESCO's fields of competence. The Director-General opened the meeting yesterday and the Chairpersons formally presented their joint conclusions and recommendations to him this afternoon.
The Joint Committee agreed to formalize its partnership by gathering once a year from now on, successively in the West Bank and Gaza or at UNESCO Headquarters. A number of projects intended to meet some urgent Palestinian needs were finalized and will be implemented by the end of this year. Furthermore, a preliminary review was carried out of some 40 mid-and long-term project proposals introduced by the Palestinian Delegation and covering the fields of education, the natural and social sciences, culture, both tangible and intangible, as well as communication and information. These proposals will constitute the basis of a new initiative to promote UNESCO's Programme for Palestine: a Plan of Action to be included in UNESCO's Draft Programme and Budget for 2004-2005, which will be submitted to and approved by the 32nd session of UNESCO's General Conference in October 2003.
It is hoped to convene a meeting of donors in the near future to ensure appropriate funding for the most promising proposals.
UNESCO's programme initiatives in favour of dialogue and reconciliation between Palestinians and Israelis were also discussed.
