The Director-General on official visit to Portugal (19-21 May 2003)

20-05-2003 - The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, is paying an official visit to Portugal from 19 to 21 May 2003.

During the visit, Koïchiro Matsuura is to meet the President of the Republic of Portugal, Mr Jorge Sampaio, and hold talks with the Prime Minister, Mr José Manuel Durao Barroso.

During the different working meetings scheduled with the Minister of Culture, the Minister of Education, and the Minister of Science and Higher Education, the state of cooperation between UNESCO and Portugal in the fields of cultural heritage and education will be reviewed. Questions relating to oceans and marine research to which Portugal attributes particular importance, and their participation in the International Oceanographic Commission (IOC) will also be discussed.

The Director-General and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, whom he welcomed at UNESCO Headquarters on 28 April last, will again address the question of Portuguese support for the Education for All (EFA) Programme in the Portuguese-speaking African countries. The arrangements for Portugal’s continuing support for Timor-Leste within the framework of numerous UNESCO activities and projects will also be discussed when Timor-Leste becomes the 189th Member State of UNESCO.

Koïchiro Matsuura will also hold talks with the Executive Secretary of the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP), with whom UNESCO signed a cooperation agreement in October 2000, on questions relating to the struggle against HIV/AIDS and the need to assist countries like Angola and Mozambique in the preparation of national action plans to meet Education for All goals. The preparation of the next ministerial meeting of countries of the CPLP, will be held on 17 and 18 July 2003 in Portugal, is also on the agenda of the meeting.

During his visit, the Director-General is to visit the Monastery of the Hieronymites and the Tower of Belem, one of twelve Portuguese sites inscribed on the World Heritage List. He will also visit the Robotics Centre in Oceanario and the Institute of Technology.
