15-05-2003 - The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, met with the President of Lithuania, Rolandas Paksas, on 14 May 2003.

The President recalled their previous meeting in April 2001 when, in his capacity as Lithuanian Prime Minister, he had welcomed Mr Matsuura in Vilnius. The Director-General’s visit had been organized on the occasion of the International Conference on Dialogue among Civilizations that Mr Matsuura co-chaired with Valdas Adamkus, the former Lithuanian President.

During the 14 May meeting, Mr Paksas expressed his satisfaction with Lithuania’s cooperation with UNESCO, in particular, in the field of culture. The Director-General highlighted the two sites – the old town of Vilnius and the Curonian Spit – inscribed on the World Heritage List; and the tradition of cross crafting proclaimed as a masterpiece of oral and intangible cultural heritage, and expressed his appreciation of Lithuania’s active participation in the preparation of the text of the draft Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Underlining the importance attached by Lithuania to the preservation of its cultural and natural heritage, President Paksas raised the pressing issue of the state of conservation of the Curonian Spit. The Director-General told the President of UNESCO’s readiness to extend its assistance in the preservation of this site inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2001.

The Director-General and the President also exchanged views on UNESCO’s action in Iraq and Lithuania’s possible involvement in the preservation of the Iraqi cultural heritage.
