Este elemento no está disponible en Español.Está disponible actualmente en Inglés. 01-05-2003 - On 30 April the Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, called on United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan at UN Headquarters. |
The Director-General warmly thanked the Secretary General for his support for the return of the United States to membership in UNESCO, which is scheduled for 1 October this year, as well as his participation in the launch of the United Nations Literacy Decade (13 February 2003, New York City).
Mr Matsuura then explained to the Secretary General UNESCO's efforts to safeguard cultural heritage and cultural goods in Iraq, including two recent meetings of experts in Iraqi cultural heritage (UNESCO Paris, 17 April 2003; British Museum, London 29 April 2003), and sending a mission to Iraq.
Director-General Matsuura said that he is trying to encourage all Member States to ratify the 1970 UNESCO Convention against illicit trafficking in cultural property. Mr. Matsuura added that any Security Council resolution(s) should consider banning the illicit export and import of Iraqi cultural objects and artefacts, which have already begun to appear at international airports and border crossings.
Mr. Matsuura mentioned the formation of an interagency committee on bioethics to coordinate work among the agencies most active in this field, and the work of the Committee of Cosponsoring Organizations of the
agencies participating in UNAIDS, the chairmanship of which will rotate to UNESCO for one year beginning in July.
