18-02-2003 10:00 am Paris - UNESCO is to award the newly created INFOLAC Web Prize to three websites targeting young people in Latin America and the Caribbean and promoting education and culture in the region. Entries must be submitted by March 31.

The competition, organized by UNESCO’s Information Society Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean (INFOLAC) and coordinated by the Libraries Department of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), will award three prizes of $1,500, $1,000 and $500.

The prizes will be awarded to sites that promote education, science and culture. Commercial, trivial or entertainment sites will not be considered. In view of the decline in the number of websites providing valuable information for young people on, for example, sex education, combating drug and alcohol abuse, employment and career guidance, art, and music. The Prizes are meant to offer support in these areas and help the winning sites to grow.

Only sites created by a private or public institution registered in any Latin American or Caribbean country and accessible at any time to the prize jury will be eligible. Criteria to be considered include: design originality, easy navigation, avoidance of repetition, usefulness, uploading time, frequency of updates and their permanence.

The Rules of the INFOLAC Web Prize can be found at: http://infolac.ucol.mx
