"Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed".

This phrase, which virtually has become UNESCO's motto, remains as relevant today as when it was first used in 1945 in the opening lines of the Organization's Constitution. Education, the natural sciences, culture, communication and the social and human sciences - these are the fields in which UNESCO seeks to defend and promote peace. Over time, of course, the world changes; new conditions and problems arise which make the path towards peace rough rather than smooth. Consequently, UNESCO must continuously adapt itself to new circumstances but always holding true to its mission. Today, UNESCO is giving priority to basic education for all, water and human security, the ethics of science and technology, cultural diversity and pluralism, the free flow of ideas and universal access to information. We look to our partners and supporters to join our pursuit of a common goal, namely, to make each one of us mindful of peace.

As Celebrity Advocates, you have agreed to spread the ideals of UNESCO through your talent and fame. Let me assure you that the role you play is invaluable. Thanks to your vocal and visible interest in the major causes championed by UNESCO and thanks to the publicity you receive in the media due to your successful careers and high reputations, you can help to rally the general public behind this collective bid to achieve a fairer world. Your task is to make people more keenly aware of the importance of what is at stake and the role that each of us can play in the cultivation of peace.
