Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Abdullah Al-Misnad today appointed UNESCO special envoy

Paris - UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura has appointed Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Abdullah Al-Misnad, Consort of the Emir of the State of Qatar, UNESCO Special Envoy for Basic and Higher Education.

During a nomination ceremony at UNESCO's Paris Headquarters today, Mr Matsuura paid tribute to the outstanding commitment of Her Highness to the promotion of education in Qatar, and her pioneering role in education initiatives.

"Your Highness has initiated pioneering projects embedded in the philosophy that people are the most valuable asset of a nation and that knowledge in all its forms should be placed at the service of society," said Mr Matsuura, adding that her "tireless action" had "helped make Qatar a regional centre of and a home to prestigious and high quality educational institutions."

As Chairperson and President of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development and the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Misnad has spearheaded activities and projects in basic and higher education, establishing several high quality, non-profit private schools and learning institutions for children and young people in Qatar.

The aim behind the Foundation's efforts is to upgrade the scientific and artistic capabilities of the country, and give Qatari society the means build a prosperous, sustainable future.

As a UNESCO Special Envoy, Her Highness's main mission will be to promote education for all children and the improvement of the quality of education throughout the world.

For Her Highness "the sharing of knowledge, ideas and values is the noblest way to transcend barriers". At the ceremony today she said she would work particularly to further education for women and girls in the Arab region. "We must try to do our best," she said. "Education is for everybody."
