11-12-2002 11:00 pm Paris - In order to help share up-to-date information and know-how on renewable energies, UNESCO, in collaboration with the Islamic Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) and the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium), is holding a conference/workshop in Yaoundé (Cameroon) from December 16-20, entitled Renewable Energies and Cogeneration for Sustainable Development in Africa.
The meeting has been organised within the Global Renewable Energy Education and Training (GREET ) Programme launched by UNESCO.

In sub-Saharan Africa, an estimated 92% of the rural population has no access to electricity. And while some countries in North Africa have rates of connection to the electricity grid comparable to Europe, the overall rate for rural areas in the region is still only 65%. The only realistic option for these areas is to produce energy from renewable energy sources, such as solar radiation, wind, biomass and water.

Aimed at decision-makers, technicians, trainers, NGOs and manufacturers from French-speaking countries in Africa, the workshop combines presentations on the state of the art in different renewable energies, with practical feedback from specialists in each country on what has been shown to work and what the obstacles are.

The lack of electricity is often a brake on development, making it impossible to store vaccines and medicines and preventing children and adults from studying after dark, for example.

The conference will be held at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure Polytechnique de Yaoundé (Cameroon), from December 16-20.
