Nurturing the democratic debate.
Several new biosphere reserves will be announced on November 8 after a meeting of the Bureau of the International Coordinating Council of UNESCO's MAB programme, which already has a network of 408 sites in 94 countries.
The reserves are chosen for their ability to combine preservation of biological diversity with sustainable use of biological resources. The reserves are nominated by Member States after consultation and coordination with governmental agencies, local communities, NGOs and local private interests.
