Nurturing the democratic debate.
This conference, called "Statistics in the Wake of Challenges Posed by Cultural Diversity in a Globalisation Context" and organized by UNESCO's Institute of Statistics and Quebec's Observatoire de la culture et des communications, will focus on how to ensure people have access to their own culture.
To do that, governments have to first decide what kind of data they need to assess and guarantee such access and measure the effectiveness of policies. Researchers, practitioners and users of national and international cultural statistics will discuss topics such as cultural policy issues: specialised themes; cross-national comparisons of cultural statistics; products of culture: their contents, classification and exchange; producers of culture: firms, artists and other cultural workers; cultural consumption and practices: a national and cross-national perspective.
