Nurturing the democratic debate.  
This $100,000 prize, awarded every two years, was set up in 1995 by Indian artist, writer and diplomat Madanjeet Singh, a former activist in Mahatma Gandhi's non-violence movement.
In 2000, the prize went to Coptic Christian Pope Shenuda III for his work on inter-faith dialogue in Egypt.
