A number of UNESCO programmes and units have been involved in the lead-up to Johannesburg, in discussing and negotiating partnership arrangements with other bodies with shared concerns and intentions.
Such partnership arrangements have been explored in a range of different fields relating to sustainable development, including education at various levels (including education for all and higher education), sustainable consumption for youth, science and technology, life support systems, water resources and aquifer management, co-management of natural resources, coastal and marine development and oceanic monitoring, mountain development.
