Swaziland Workshop on Presentation of Conventions to the House of Assembly, 1 to 3 December 2010

UNESCO highlights the importance of protecting, safeguarding and managing tangible and intangible heritage in Swaziland

Acceptance of international treaties and similar binding instruments in a country require the consents of the governmental bodies; in Swaziland a workshop focusing on the presentation of UNESCO Conventions was held from 1st to -3rd December 2010 to introduce, among other international standard setting instruments, three UNESCO Conventions to the house of assembly to assist with the process of ratification. Each convention has its own governing structure, requirements and various benefits that are beneficial to each member states. The overall aim of the workshop included getting an understanding of the Conventions, to appreciate the role of each Convention and how the country will benefit from its implementation.

The presented conventions were the following:
1. 1970 Convention on the means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of ownership of Cultural Property, ratification of this convention could assist in the repatriation of the specimen that are kept in foreign territory.

2. 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage; ratification of this convention will lead to enhanced safeguarding of elements listed in the heritage inventory.

3. 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, ratification of this convention will offer benefits such as provision of avenues for the exchange of information with regards to safeguarding measures and access to funding for the implementation of safeguarding strategies as well as capacity building and sharing of skills and techniques.
