UNESCO-PRIVATE COMMITTEES PROGRAMME FOR THE SAFEGUARDING OF VENICE In response to the appeal launched by UNESCO DG in 1966, private organizations were established in a number of countries to collect and channel contributions to restore and preserve Venice.
|
In response to the appeal launched by the Director-General of UNESCO in 1966, over 50 private organizations were established in a number of countries to collect and channel contributions to restore and preserve Venice. Over the years, the International Private Committees have worked closely with the Venice Superintendencies of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, through UNESCO, in order to identify and address priority needs.
In over 40 years of constant activity, the Private Committees have funded more than 1,500 projects worth over 50 million euro, provided laboratory equipment and scientific expertise, sponsored research and publications and awarded innumerable grants for craftsmen and restorers to attend specialist courses in Venice.
Today, the Association of Private Committees includes 24 member organizations from 10 different countries. Since 1997, the Association has enjoyed the status of NGO in operational relations with UNESCO.
