Intangible heritage: helping heal disaster victims

Survivors of the quake have been seen and heard singing traditional songs and hymns, playing the drums and seeking comfort and strength from their rich intangible cultural heritage, which in many cases is all they have left

UNESCO is preparing to mobilize survivors of the quake to draw on this cultural heritage to help restore their communities, repair broken links between generations and fortify bruised spirits. One project being planned involves giving young people training and equipment to record the stories, songs, and memories of older community members.
