 UNESCO-BRESCE Media Advisory (Serbia) 14/07/2009 : Keeping mind existing national priorities from the countries sharing the “Danube –Drava–Mura River corridor”, (Austria, Croatia, Hungary, Serbia and Slovenia), the UNESCO Office in Venice–UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe (BRESCE), the Serbian Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning, the National Park ‘Fruška Gora’ (Serbia) and the Special Nature Reserve ‘Gornja Podunavlja, (Serbia) will organize an international workshop from 23 to 24 July 2009 in Belgrade and Novi Sad, Serbia.
Twenty representatives from eight countries (Austria, Croatia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Serbia and Slovenia) will discuss scenarios of integrated river management and identify a joint ‘road map’ related to the possible Danube-Drava-Mura, trans-boundary Biosphere Reserves (TBR) nomination. A detailed “road map” would establish general guidelines needed in determining an internationally accepted course of action. Trans-boundary Biosphere Reserves (TBRs), as developed within the UNESCO Man and Biosphere (MaB) Programme, provides a tool for integrated trans-boundary management. As well, TBRs are officially recognized international designations, serving the purpose of accommodating a mosaic of land use patterns and of planning management. A “Danube–Drava–Mura” TBR, would embody the commitment of the countries contributing to the Madrid Action Plan (MAP) and apply the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) ecosystem approach while complying to the EU nature conservation related directives. The Danube River Basin is Europe's second largest river basin and its ecosystems are highly valuable in environmental, economic, and social terms.
