Launch of the National Strategy for Science, Technology & Innovation of Albania

sti-medium2.jpg UNESCO-BRESCE News (Albania) 16/6/2009 : The Albanian Government (Department of Donor Coordination of the Office of the Prime Minister, and the Ministry of Education and Science) launches the National Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) of Albania on the occasion of a Conference organized on 17 June in Tirana, in the presence of Vice Prime-Minister Genc Pollo, the Minister of Education and Science, Mr Fatos Beja, the UN Resident Coordinator, Ms Gülden Türköz-Cosslett, and the Director UNESCO BRESCE, Mr Engelbert Ruoss.

Formulated with UNESCO’s technical expertise and advice, on the basis of extensive national consultation with a large panel of representatives of the scientific community and of Ministries, the Strategy constitutes the first step towards building a ‘knowledge-based’ economy and society in Albania. It provides the country’s medium-term vision for the period 2009-2015 with regard to science and research while focusing on ‘’ the achievement of excellence in a small number of priority areas by 2015, through the concentration of national and international resources and in close cooperation with Europe, as well as through the provision of systematic support for innovation and technology transfer to cater for the needs of the productive sector”.
