The Africa Week is an annual event organized by the African Group at UNESCO to commemorate the establishment in May 1963 of the Organization of African Unity (now called the African Union). The Director-General opened this week of celebrations on 25 May last (see Flash Info N°093-2009*). “Africa within its cultural and sports dynamics”, was chosen as this year’s theme, highlighting two important events that are scheduled to take place in Africa in the near future, namely FESMAN (World Festival of Black Arts) to be held in Senegal in December 2009, and the FIFA World Cup to be hosted by South Africa in 2010. The events of the week included exhibitions, film shows, conferences, and the closing Gala and reception. The official visit of Mr Amadou Toumani Touré, President of Mali, also marked the 2009 edition of Africa Week at UNESCO (see Flash Info N°103-2009**).
Welcoming the Director-General at the evening Gala were Mr David Hamadziripi, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Zimbabwe to UNESCO, Chairperson of the Africa group, Dr Abdulsalam Ei-Qallali, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Libya to UNESCO, and Representative of the 2009 AU Presidency, Ms Tadelech Haile-Mikael, Ambassador of Ethiopia to UNESCO and Chairperson of this year’s Organizing committee. The latter expressed to the Director-General the Africa Group’s gratitude for the particular attention that UNESCO gave to the event and thanked him for his support in this regard. Ms Haile-Mikael also thanked the Africa Department for having contributed to the success of the Africa Week.
The Director-General congratulated the Organizing Committee for a job well done in putting together a programme that displayed the rich diversity of Africa’s cultures and cultural expressions.
Guests at this gala included bilateral Ambassadors and Permanent Delegates to UNESCO and members of the general public. Among others, the programme included folkloric music from Africa, clothing fashion, and a performance by Master Dominique Saatenang, the only African Shaolin Master and Double World vice Champion of Wushu Kungfu.
