The meeting was attended by Directors of UN Agencies based in France as well as members of the Senior Management Team of UNESCO Secretariat.
Welcoming the Directors of the UN Agencies based in France, the Director-General noted that the Security Management Group has the collective responsibility of supporting him in the discharge of his mandate for the safety and security of UN staff in France. “This is the main security policy decision-making body and it will implement any measures decided upon for the security and protection of UN personnel and premises and maintain liaison with the competent host country authorities,” he stated.
The Director-General underscored that the issue of security has become a constant concern, especially in the wake of recent attacks against UN agencies. He recalled that the UN System Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB), at its meeting held at UNESCO in early April 2009 and chaired by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (see Flash Info N° 057-2009*), also addressed the question of security, highlighting the critical importance of remaining vigilant to potential security breaches that may affect the UN agencies.
