UNESCO Concert for Peace: Music for Dialogue and Reconciliation
Benefit concert to support activities and projects related to intercultural and interreligious dialogue and to the process of peace building in the South East Europe

The UNESCO Office in Venice is pleased to announce the UNESCO Concert for Peace : Music for Dialogue and Reconciliation, a benefit concert in favour of intercultural and interreligious dialogue and process of peace building in the South East European region that will take place on Monday 20 April 2009 at 8pm. in Venice (Italy) .
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The UNESCO Concert for Peace is organized by UNESCO in collaboration with the Municipality of Venice and the Government of the FYR of Macedonia and its honourary committee is presided by Koichiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO and Françoise Rivière, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture.

The concert will bring together in the legendary Theatre “La Fenice” UNESCO Artists for Peace and 50 musicians, representing 4 different religions, 12 countries and cultures. Musicians and artists of international fame have generously responded to UNESCO’s appeal to perform together to demonstrate that "music knows no barriers" and "has the potential to rise above destruction to build a bridge for mutual understanding and lasting peace", as beautifully worded by the writer Marek Halter. Former Director General of UNESCO (1987 - 1999), Federico Mayor, wrote about the Concert : "Music is a universal language. Pace, peace, paix, paz, pau, shalom, salam, mir… all melt in a unique pentagram, in sounds understandable by all the peoples, fostering attitudes of otherness and brotherhood."

UNESCO Artists for Peace Ino Mirkovic (violinist) and Boris Trajanov (baritone), Musical Ambassador Milton Masciadri (Double bassist), Gianluca Terranova and Blagoj Nacoski (tenors), Michael Guttman and Ashraf Kateb (violonists), Kirill Rodin (cellist), Ksenia Morozova (pianist) are among those internationally-renowned personalities who will perform on this occasion in the legendary Theatre La Fenice of the splendid city of Venice, crossroad of religions, traditions and cultures. Claudia Cardinale UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador is the Master of Ceremony of this event.

In sustaining UNESCO’s constitutional mission, “…since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed”, UNESCO-BRESCE is promoting this benefit concert to support activities and projects related to inter-cultural and inter-religious dialogue and to the process of peace building in South East Europe.
