Lura Concert organized in collaboration with the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie
9 March 2009, Room I, 8:00 p.m.
|
The name of the country is Cape Verde and the young woman is Lura. She sings about the string of ten islands, ten volcanic pebbles scattered in the ocean off Senegal. Lura has remained faithful to her roots. Her music is not only influenced by the birthplace of her ancestors, but also by Portuguese pop, African beats and American soul. Through her background and her music, Lura promotes cultural diversity and highlights the importance of empowering women. She also actively campaigns to defend the rights of children and promotes HIV and AIDS awareness.
Thanks to her music, the younger generations from Cape Verde have rediscovered local music sung by their parents and grandparents. The islands of Cape Verde have made significant contributions to the world of music, and today, Lura has assumed the role of leading the younger generation of musicians from Cape Verde.
