On 26 January 2009, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, relayed his support for the AlFakhoora campaign in a video message.

Launched in Qatar on 8 January last, AlFakhoora is an international student solidarity campaign, supported by Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Missned, UNESCO Special Envoy for Basic and Higher Education. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the plight of students in Gaza and to appeal to the international community to raise its voice in insisting that education be protected during the current crisis.

“As the recent violence in the Gaza Strip has demonstrated, school children and students continue to be the victims of military conflict,” said the Director-General in his message, before declaring: “I reiterate my call to the international community to join our efforts to keep schools safe and protect the basic human right to quality education. This is the foundation for sustained peace, development and democracy.”

Mr Matsuura further stated that he strongly welcomes Her Highness Sheikha Mozah’s proposal to have a certain number of schools in Gaza declared as safety zones. “Such international mobilization is essential to our work to protect educational institutions in times of conflict. It is therefore with great pleasure that I pledge UNESCO’s support for the campaign,” he concluded.
