MOUNIR BOUCHENAKI (Algeria)

Mounir Bouchenaki holds a Postgraduate Degree in History from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Algiers (Algeria) and a Doctorate in Archaeology and Ancient History from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Aix-en-Provence (France). After teaching Latin, History and Geography at the Lycee Benzedjeb in Tlemcen and the Lycee Emir Abdelkader in Algiers, he was appointed to the Algerian Department of Antiquities, first as Research Assistant from 1965 to 1969 and then as Head Curator in charge of research from 1969 to 1974. From 1975 to 1981 he worked as Deputy-Director and subsequently Director of the Department of Fine Art, Monuments and Sites at the Ministry of Information and Culture in Algiers. He has been a member of ICOM and ICOMOS since 1967. Mr. Bouchenaki joined UNESCO in 1982 as Programme Specialist in the Division of Cultural Heritage. He was promoted Head of the Operations and Training Section in 1985, before being appointed Director of the Division in 1992. From February 1999 to September 2000 he was concurrently Director of the World Heritage Centre, Director of the Division of the Cultural Heritage and ensured the interim of Assistant-Director General for Culture. He was confirmed as Assistant Director-General for Culture on 1 November 2000. On 1 March 2006 he was elected as Director-General of ICCROM.
