The Director-General pays tribute to Nelson Mandela

During his intervention at the Information meeting of UNESCO’s Executive Board, the Director-General, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, paid tribute to Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa and Nobel Peace Prize winner, who celebrated his 90th birthday on 18 July.

The Director-General recalled that Nelson Mandela is a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Human Rights. It was during an official visit to South Africa in July 2005 that Mr Matsuura had conferred Mr Mandela with the title of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador at a ceremony organized at the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

The title was given to him in recognition of his major role in the fight against apartheid and racism, his tireless commitment to democracy, equality and the defense of the oppressed, and finally for his exemplary contribution to building peace.

UNESCO’s Executive Board joined its voice to this homage through its Chairman, Mr Olabiyi Babalola Joseph Yaï, who conveyed his very best wishes to Nelson Mandela.
