Mr Matsuura recalled the 3 million Brazilian children and youngsters in need that have benefited from ‘Criança Esperança’, a programme created by TV Globo 23 years ago which UNESCO has been participating in since 2004. The Programme is based on a multi-donor social mobilization and fundraising campaign. The funds gathered support 4 ‘Criança Esperança’ Centres spread throughout Brazil, a nation-wide project on early childhood and preventive education, as well as a great number of grass root projects selected by UNESCO. The programme promotes social inclusion, educational opportunities, and guarantees human rights for socially vulnerable populations.
“Our partnership is an excellent example of how the public and private sectors can collaborate effectively for the benefit of those most in need through social mobilisation and fundraising. This is a concept and initiative that can be easily replicated in other countries,” underscored the Director-General.
