DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNESCO

UNDP Administrator Kemal Derviş visits UNESCO Headquarters

On 19 May 2008, Mr Kemal Derviş, Administrator of UNDP and Chairman of the United Nations Development Group (UNDG), visited UNESCO Headquarters for a working meeting with Mr Ko´chiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO.

They discussed issues of common interest at the inter-agency level, in particular: the new structure of UNDG as the third pillar of CEB; various initiatives related to UN reform taken by the Member States within the framework of the UN General Assembly; as well as UNDP/UNESCO bilateral cooperation. The meeting also provided an opportunity to review follow-up to the spring 2008 session of the Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB) in Bern, Switzerland (27-29 April 2008).

Administrator Derviş informed the Director-General of the practical operational modalities of the newly established UNDG Advisory Group (following its formal adoption by the CEB last April) composed of a group of 12 Funds, Programmes and Specialized Agencies, including UNESCO. Mr Matsuura confirmed to the UNDG Chair UNESCOĺs commitment to be an active member of this new group, which in essence is replacing the previous more limited group of the UNDG Executive Committee. The Director-General accepted with pleasure the invitation of Mr Derviş to participate in the first Advisory Group meeting to be held in late June in New York on the margin of the ECOSOC substantive session of 2008.

The Director-General also briefed Mr Derviş on the visit of Ambassadors Mahiga (Tanzania) and Kavanagh (Ireland), the current co-Chairs of the UN General Assembly informal consultations on UN system-wide Coherence, to UNESCO on 25 April 2008 (see Flash Info 052-2008). Finally, on a bilateral basis, the Director-General and the Administrator of UNDP said they were looking forward to cooperating in the framework of the forthcoming Tokyo International Conference on African Development, TICAD IV (28-30 May 2008, Yokohama, Japan). They also agreed to sign in late June 2008, during Mr Matsuuraĺs visit to New York, a Strategic Agreement between UNESCO and UNDP, delineating the respective substantive responsibilities of each Organization in their main areas of competence, and strengthening collaboration.
