Father Nicolo's Association

The Bosconia project, Father Nicolo's Association, has been implementing a multiphase rehabilitation programme for street children in Bogota, COlombia, since the early 1970S. As a result of father Nicolo's efforts, more than 40 thousand children have left the streets and found new horizons in life. At present, 70 centers house more than 14 thousand children and youths.

Improving ability to read and write

Project Literacy, a programme of the Free Public Library in Watertown, Massachusetts, U.S.A., assists adults in basic education. Participants improve their ability to read, write, and converse in English, and gain access to community resources and services.

Non-Formal Education Programme (NFE) started by the Women's Association of Bhutan.

The Non-Formal Education Programme (NFE) is a basic functional literacy programme that was started in 1992 by the Women's Association of Bhutan. (623 NFE centres in 2005). It provides free of cost relevant life skills ranging from reading, writing, simple calculating to tailoring, furniture making, hairdressing etc to out of school youth and adults. Each NFE class will start by a prayer.

North Westminster community school in London

70% of Secondary pupils at North Westminster community school in inner London (2,000 pupils) speak English as an additional language (EAL), not enough to follow lessons. They come from regions such as Iraq, Afghanistan Somalia and the Balkans and are often illiterate even in their mother tongue. The school makes use of bilingual assistants and “partnership teaching” where a mainstream subject teacher and a qualified teacher specializing in EAL jointly plan and deliver lessons, a method copied in other countries with diverse minority groups with some success.

Samburu children near Maralal

Samburu children near Maralal, (175 miles north of Nairobi), thrive thanks to "Loipi" community learning centres. The Loipi Project is part of Kenya's nationwide Early Childhood Care and Education programme and is funded by the Christian Childrens' Fund. 85 Loipi in the Samburu district, and children from different communities gather at the closest one. Most materials used are locally made and produced and caregivers include mothers, grandmothers and other community members. A grandmother helping out.

The Robinson Mission

The Robinson Mission is the national literacy program launched by President Hugo Chavez. It is based on the Yo Si Puedo method conceived by the Cuban expert Leonela Relys. It addresses adults of various ages from various job situations including the unemployed. In six to eight weeks, it teaches reading, writing in Spanish as well as in the 34 languages of ethnic minorities, through spoken words, sign language or brail and gives access to citizenship to all participants. On the hills of Caracas, a literacy centre for the visually impaired using a brail teaching method.
