The Director-General participates in a UN meeting on “Delivering as One” in Geneva

On 14 February 2008, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, participated in a meeting convened by Mr Kemal Dervis, Administrator of UNDP and Chair of the United Nations Development Group (UNDG), in Geneva in preparation of the next session of the Chief Executives Board (CEB) to be held in Berne, Switzerland, in April.

Ms Thoraya Obaid, Executive Director of UNFPA; Ms Josette Sheeran, Executive Director of WFP; Ms Margaret Chan, Director-General of WHO, and Mr Juan Somavia, Director-General of ILO, also participated in the meeting.

Discussions focused on the progress made and the next steps to be taken with regard to the eight “Delivering as One” pilots. There was agreement on the crucial importance of the quality of Resident Coordinators as one of the main factors in the success of the UN efforts to deliver as one.

Participants also agreed on the Terms of Reference and membership criteria for the UNDG Advisory Group, which the CEB had decided to set up at its October 2007 session in order to provide frequent guidance to the UNDG Chair on the management of the operational dimensions of UNDG and the RC system. The Director-General advocated the importance of including key Specialized Agencies as permanent members in the Group, given the important role they play in promoting the Millennium Development Goals at the country level. The detailed proposal for the setting up the Group will be submitted by Administrator Dervis to the CEB at its spring 2008 session.

Discussions also touched upon the new security environment and the financing of UN development activities at country level.
