Signature of the One UN Programme by United Nations participating Agencies and the Government of Albania

OneUNProgramme-signing.jpg UNESCO-BRESCE 25/10/2007 : On the occasion of the ceremony celebrating United Nations 62nd anniversary on UN Day, Heads of United Nations participating Agencies and Prime Minister of the Republic of Albania H. E Sali BERISHA signed the One UN Programme on 24 October 2007 in Tirana (Albania). Mr Engelbert Ruoss, Director UNESCO Office in Venice (BRESCE), elected representative of UNESCO, signed on behalf of the Organization the One UN Programme in Albania.

Out of the One UN Programme action plan amounting to a total of 75 Million dollars for the next 4 years, the UN Agencies participating in the Programme will contribute to 40 Million and donor countries and institutions will fund the remaining 35 Million.

As active partner in the process of developing the One UN Programme, UNESCO is one of the participating UN Agencies in the One UN Programme in Albania (UNHCR, UNIFEM, UNICEF, UNDP, UNFPA, UNEP, ILO, WHO , FAO). UNESCO will implement activities in the fields of culture, science and education.

The “One UN” pilot initiative will test in eight countries how the UN family – with its many and diverse agencies - can deliver in a more co-ordinated way at country level. Albania was selected, along with with seven other countries, to pilot the One-UN concept which is expected to result in One UN programme with one budgetary framework, one UN Leader and one UN office. Albania is the only one in Europe to test a worldwide programme of UN reform.
