On Saturday, 20 October 2007, the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura met with the Minister of Education of Pakistan, Mr Ashraf, on the margins of UNESCO’s 34th General Conference.

On this occasion, Mr Matsuura expressed his “deep emotion” following the terrorist attack that plunged Pakistan into grief last 18 October, and left over 130 people dead and several hundred wounded according to provisional estimates.

As he had already expressed in a letter of condolence addressed to President Musharraf, the Director-General of UNESCO “strongly condemns this reprehensible assault on peaceful civilians.” He asked the Minister of Education to “convey, once again, [his] most sincere condolences to the families of the victims, and to the people and government of Pakistan.”
