The International Year of Planet Earth runs from January 2007 to December 2009. The year in the middle (2008) was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly as the UN Year. The IYPE is a joint initiative of UNESCO and the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS).
The Year aims to contribute to the Millennium Development Goals, to the achievement of the objectives of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development and to raise awareness and appreciation of the Earth as the ultimate resource for our everyday needs and the foundation of the global society and economy.
