Ratification by Japan of the Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and its First Protocol (The Hague, 14 May 1954)
On 10 September 2007, Japan deposited with the Director-General its instruments of ratification of the Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and its First Protocol. |
The instrument of ratification of the First Protocol was accompanied by a letter containing the following declaration:
“In applying the provisions of paragraph 3 of I of the Protocol, Japan will fulfill the obligation under those provisions in a manner consistent with its domestic laws including the civil code. Japan will be, therefore, bound by the provisions of Section I of the Protocol to the extent that their fulfillment is compatible with the above-mentioned domestic laws.” [Original: English]
In accordance with the terms of Article 33(2) of the Convention and Article 10(b) of its Protocol, the Convention and its First Protocol will enter into force with respect to Japan three months after the deposit of these instruments, that is to say on 10 December 2007.
