The informal meeting on the Implementation of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development on 4-5 October 2007, in Venice at UNESCO BRESCE (Palazzo Zorzi) intends to strengthen cooperation towards the implementation of the Decade within Europe. In particular, the objective of the meeting is to discuss specific joint action and political strategies to promote the goals of the UN Decade of ESD at the European level and to develop suggestions to UNESCO. The focus will be on the following 3 issues:

• Action on the level of the European Union, if possible together with current and in-coming EU Presidencies
• Procedure to recognize good practice projects in ESD on a European level
• European contribution to UNESCO’s Implementation Scheme and UNESCO’s DESD Action Plan

The meeting is an initiative of the German National Committee for the Decade/German Commission for UNESCO, the French National Committee for the Decade, and the UNESCO Office in Venice. In order to be able to work with a regional focus, participants from European countries ( chairpersons of national Decade Committees, or official Decade focal points within the administration) have been invited. The round of participants wil be composed of a small working group size in order to enable substantive debate. The following countries approached are : Austria, France, Finland, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland.
