On 2 July 2007, the Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, met at UNESCO Headquarters with senior representatives from the Russian Olympic Committee and its Sport Information Agency.

The objective of the meeting was to discuss a proposal sponsored by the Russian Olympic Committee to organize an Olympic Friendship Children’s Forum as a side event for each Olympic Game. This forum would be established to promote, through special cultural and sports events, the Olympic principles and ideals among youth and children of all nations.

“Sport is a powerful tool to strengthen social ties and networks, and to promote ideals of peace, fraternity, solidarity, non-violence, tolerance and justice. It is therefore crucial to continue raising awareness among the general public and encourage the youth to share their knowledge about the values of sport, excellence and brotherhood, and engage in concrete and sustainable dialogue", declared the Director-General. “UNESCO welcomes this initiative and will stand ready, along with the International Olympic Movement, to mobilize partners in order to achieve the cultural and educational goals of this proposed forum”, he added.

Following the announcement made on 5 July by the International Olympic Committee that Sochi had been selected as host to the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, Mr Matsuura also expressed his sincere congratulations to the authorities of the Russian Federation, in a letter addressed to President Putin. “The Olympic Games have always provided an ideal platform to showcase the vast cultural diversity of the world and they can be a powerful vehicle for peace by forging social ties and networks, mutual respect and understanding between peoples. Sport also has an important educational role to play, particularly with young people. UNESCO is keen to work with you to ensure that the 2014 Winter Olympic Games are a source of inspiration and learning for all peoples throughout the world”, underlined the Director-General in his message.
