The Forum builds on the discussion launched at the G-8 summit in St. Petersburg (Russia, 15-17 July 2006) on the interconnections between the three components of the “triangle of knowledge”—education, scientific research and technological innovation—from the perspective of sustainable development. It seeks to identify risks and opportunities for industrialized countries as well as developing and low-income countries.
“University, Research Institutions and Industry: What Partnership to Develop a Global Innovation Society?” as well as sustainable development and health, energy, and knowledge are some of the topics to be discussed at the forum. There will also be special roundtables on “Research and Innovation: The Role of the Government” and "Science, Technology and Innovation: Perspectives for Africa.”
The forum is being organized by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, an international scientific institution under the aegis of UNESCO and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is financed by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR).
UNESCO has supported the G-8 Forum in the framework of its program on the Decade for Education for Sustainable Development, for which it is the lead agency within the UN system. The Organization has contributed to the definition of the contents of the Forum through a working group consisting of officers in the educational and scientific sectors.
