a) What is UNESCO’s present role regarding the safeguarding of Afghan cultural heritage?
In January 2002, UNESCO was officially requested by Dr Abdullah Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Afghan Interim Administration, to play a coordinating role in all international and bilateral activities aimed at the safeguarding of Afghanistan’s cultural heritage. On 1 March 2002 and as a first step, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the Afghan Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Said Makhdoom Raheen, which entrusted UNESCO with the coordination of international efforts for theNational Museum of Kabul.
