Old City of Jerusalem: The Director-General of UNESCO explores sending a technical assessment mission

“I am conducting extensive consultations on sending a technical mission of UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre to the site of the Old City of Jerusalem, which is inscribed on the World Heritage List and the World Heritage in Danger List, in order to carry out an exact assessment of the situation on the spot,” announced the Director-General of UNESCO on Wednesday, 21 February 2007. “This mission would comprise experts representing ICOMOS*, ICCROM** and the World Heritage Centre.

“I believe that sending a mission to Jerusalem would constitute the most appropriate response to the present situation. The World Heritage Committee would be the recipient of this assessment, which would provide the clarifications requested regarding the nature and the extent of the work already undertaken and envisaged on and around the site, in accordance with the decision adopted by the Committee at the time of its 30th session, in Vilnius, in July 2006,” the Director-General added.

“Such a mission could be a means of helping to alleviate tensions and restore a climate of confidence favourable to the dialogue that we all wish for,” declared the Director-General.
