UNESCO held its first information meeting of the year 2007 on Friday 19 January. It was dedicated to the preparation of the 177th session of the Executive Board, which will take place from 10 to 26 April 2007.

These meetings are organized to ensure that the Board is completely informed between the two regular sessions. In accordance to the decision made at the 176th session, the number of information meetings is henceforth two per year, in order to guarantee an even richer dialogue between the Organization’s governing bodies and the Secretariat.

The Chairman of the Executive Board*, Mr. Zhang Xinsheng (China), opened the meeting, which carried on with an intervention by the Director-General, Mr. Koïchiro Matsuura**. The rest of the day was dedicated to exchanges between the Member States and the Director-General allowing them to engage in a productive dialogue.

These interactive debates notably focused on the preparation of programme and budget projects being currently elaborated (34 C/4 and 34 C/5), the future of UNESCO, the reform of the United Nations System, Education for All and the revision and application of the Global Action Plan. Questions regarding the organization’s priority activities in its different fields of competence were also addressed, providing the opportunity to exchange thorough points of view.
