UNESCO Director-General pays tribute to Abbé Pierre

22-01-2007 2:00 pm The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, declared he was “deeply moved” by the death of Abbé Pierre, on 22 January 2007. “He was an indefatigable champion of human dignity,” declared the Director-General. “On numerous occasions, Abbé Pierre and UNESCO led this fight together. He will be sorely missed by all the men and women, regardless of social backgrounds, religious obedience or political affiliation, whom he led along the trail of commitment and solidarity.”

“Personally, I am deeply moved,” Mr Matsuura said. “I met Abbé Pierre on several occasions and I will cherish his memory as an exceptional man who put his spiritual and physical energies at the service the poorest of the poor, throughout his life. I present my condolences, both in my own name and on behalf of UNESCO, to his family and to his companions, as well as to all those for whom he represented hope.”
