Design 21 ring to be featured at the Golden Globes film awards

Stars at the Golden Globe film awards on 15 January 2007 will be wearing a special ring designed by renowned furniture and industrial designer Richard Hutten exclusively for Design 21: Social Design Network, a joint UNESCO/Felissimo venture.
The Allumonde ring—whose name is derived from "allumer le monde" (meaning "light the world") is the symbol of Design 21, a new online collaborative effort between designers, socially-conscious individuals, governments, the private sector and non-profit organizations. It aims to find solutions to social problems through good design. The major objective is to demonstrate how a clever use of design contributes to the betterment of the planet and the well-being of its inhabitants.

By wearing the ring, individuals support this cause and make a bold fashion statement. Wearing the ring represents Commitment to the cause, Connection to one another, and Continuity to the cycle of giving. “We are trying to involve personalities in the fields of art and design to act as advocates,” says Indrasen Vencatachellum, who heads the Arts, Crafts and Design Section at UNESCO. “It is also highly symbolic – people wear something in common for peace,” he adds.

Proceeds from sales of the ring, which will be showcased on 13 and 14 January to stars attending the Golden Globes, support a large network of non-profit organizations worldwide and allow individuals to direct proceeds to the charity of their choice. 21% of all proceeds will be donated - 19% to the charity or non-profit organization (NPO) of the member’s choice and 2% to UNESCO.

UNESCO will use the proceeds to activate projects, including a series of design contests related to social issues that will be held within the framework of the Design 21 network.
