Ohrid Declaration

ohrid-declaration-2.jpg
On 3-4 November 2006, along the shores of beautiful Ohrid Lake, Ministers of culture of Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Italy, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia, together with the Assistant Director-General for Culture of UNESCO, met for the annual conference on cultural heritage in South-Eastern Europe. The conference (Ohrid 2006), hosted by the FYROM government and opened by FYROM prime Minister, was the third ministerial meeting organised within the regional cooperation initiative “Cultural Heritage – a Bridge towards a Shared Future”, promoted by UNESCO and supported by the Italian government.

Proceedings of the meeting focussed on two main issues: the assessment of results so far achieved on the basis of previous ministerial conferences (Mostar 2004; Venice 2005), and the definition of new principles, objectives and activities for the prosecution of regional cooperation on this field. The discussion highlighted the commitment of all parties to reinforce common action for the preservation and the promotion of the shared cultural heritage, intended as a key resource to support dialogue, integration, as well as human and economic development in the region.

In conclusion of the meeting, participating ministers signed a joined declaration fixing new principles and goals for the furtherance of regional cooperation on this field. Ministers also agreed on accepting invitation by the Croatian government to next year’s Ministerial conference, to be held in Zadar (Croatia) in autumn 2007, so as to ensure institutional and operative continuity to the initiative.
