Nurturing the democratic debate.

30-11-2006 3:00 pm A conference entitled “Education for All in the Sultanate of Oman: from Access to Success” will be held at UNESCO Headquarters on 5 and 6 December under the patronage of Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura and Oman’s Minister of Education, Yehia Bin Saud Al Suleimi. The event is organized, in close cooperation with the Education Sector, by the Omani Ministry of Education and the country’s Permanent Delegation to the Organization in honour of UNESCO’s 60th anniversary.
The conference* will be opened on 5 December at 10 a.m. by the Director-General, the Omani Minister of Education, the Permanent Delegate of the Sultanate of Oman to UNESCO and President of the General Conference Musa Bin Jaafar Bin Hassan, the President of the Executive Council of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) Hisham Nachabe, and the Director General of the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States, Ali Bin Abdel Khalek Al Karni.

A round table, presided by UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Education, Peter Smith, will bring together experts and authorities from all over the world, notably the Minister of Education and Higher Learning of Mozambique, Bonifácio Baptista Aly, on December 5 and 6.

In the context of the conference, an exhibition will be inaugurated on 5 December (Miró Hall), presenting pupils’ paintings and drawings as well as publications and other works including documentary films and photography exploring the theme of Education For All. The exhibition will last until 8 December. A documentary about education in the Sultanate of Oman will also be screened, and a ceremony held to launch a book about EFA in the country.

The conference will highlight the progress made towards achieving EFA goals (Dakar, 2000), and the measures taken to reach the goals set for 2015**.

* The conference will take place in Room II and the round table in Room XI on 5 December and Room X on 6 December.

2. Ensuring that by 2015 all children have access to, and complete, free and compulsory primary education of good quality
3. Ensuring that the learning needs of all young people and adults are met through equitable access to appropriate learning and life-skills programmes
4. Achieving a 50 per cent improvement in levels of adult literacy by 2015
5. Eliminating gender disparities in primary and secondary education by 2005, and achieving gender equality in education by 2015
6. Improving the quality of education
