Nurturing the democratic debate.  
10-10-2006 2:00 pm The President of the Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou Nguesso, currently President of the African Union, will make an official visit to UNESCO Headquarters on 11 and 12 October.
The Congolese President, elected to head the African Union last January, will address UNESCO’s Executive Council, the Ambassadors and Permanent Delegates to the Organization and invited African intellectuals and artists on Thursday, 12 October at 9.55 a.m. (Room II).

The President will present his vision of the reform of the United Nations and outline the African Union’s views on the priority that UNESCO should give to Africa over the coming years.

His address will preceded by Musa Bin Jaafar Bin Hassan, President of the General Conference, Xinsheng Zhang, Chairman of the Executive Board, and Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO.

Denis Sassou Nguesso will also have a private meeting with the Director-General.

The President will also attend the ceremony designating Congolese musician Jean Serge Essous as UNESCO Artist for Peace, and the opening of “A Look at Congolese Culture” exhibition on Wednesday 11 October from 3.30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Foyer des Conférences.

A member of UNESCO since 1960, the Republic of Congo is home to a field office in Brazzaville, the capital city.
