Biodiversity in freshwater ecosystems and contiguous land areas forms part of the research agenda of work on ecohydrology within the International Hydrological Programme (IHP).

Collaborative studies on ecohydrology were promoted in IHP-V (1997-2001), building on earlier work within the MAB-IHP-SIL project on “Land-inland water ecotones and their role in landscape management and restoration. This work is continuing during IHP-VI(2002-2007) with a web site under the aegis of the University of Lodz in Poland.
