Director-General establishes UNESCO Chair on Education for Sustainable Development at Lund University, Sweden

On 6 September, Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, and Ms Ann Numhauser-Henning, Pro-Vice Chancellor of Lund University signed, an agreement establishing a UNESCO Chair in Education for Sustainable Development at Lund University.

The ceremony took place in the presence of Ms Gun-Britt Andersson, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Sweden to UNESCO, and other representatives of Member States with whom this UNESCO Chair will cooperate.

In his opening remarks, the Director-General welcomed the signing of the agreement and underscored its importance to UNESCO as the lead agency for the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014). “I am happy we are signing this agreement in the presence of so many Permanent Delegates,” said the Director-General. “As lead agency for the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, your participation today bodes well for the future,” he said.

This new UNESCO Chair will promote a long-term integrated system of research, training, information and documentation in the field of education for sustainable development and serve as a catalyst for collaboration between international universities. In the short-term the university will develop online courses for sustainable development and carry out training courses for governments, business, academia, secondary and higher education students and NGOs.

For her part the Ambassador of Sweden welcomed the establishment of a second UNESCO Chair on Education for Sustainable Development in Sweden with the other UNESCO Chair at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. She also detailed her country’s work to institutionalize education for sustainable development within the United Nations system as a whole and stressed the importance of supporting the work of the new Chair.

The Pro-Vice Chancellor of the university added, “Enhancing the capacity of individuals to help change towards a sustainable society is becoming the primary goal for any educational institution. It is in this endeavor Lund University is very proud to host (…) this UNESCO Chair in Education for Sustainable Development.”
