Since 2003, the Fund has been providing immediate and long term assistance for the reconstruction of higher education in Iraq.

Background
As mentioned by Koïchiro Matsuura, Director General of UNESCO, in 2005, Iraqi academics are still suffering from isolation. It is a timely moment for the international community to look again at its longer-term cooperation with Iraq and to make appropriate adjustments in the perspective of reconstruction, sustained development and peace.

In 2003, the International Fund for Higher Education in Iraq was initiated by the First Lady of Qatar; cooperation was undertaken by UNESCO and the Fund to build a framework for international efforts in order to provide immediate and long-term assistance for the reconstruction of higher education in Iraq.

Achievements
Several projects are implemented, through which the following have been provided:

  • Equipment and material for Laboratories - Medical and Related disciplines;
  • Engineering equipment;
  • Textbooks and reference books;
  • Computers and internet centers;
  • 145 short-term fellowships;
  • Furniture for several dormitories.
