UNAIDS cosponsors and Secretariat
UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, brings together the efforts and resources of ten UN system organizations to the global AIDS response. Based in Geneva, the UNAIDS Secretariat works on the ground in more than 75 countries world wide.
As a founding cosponsor of UNAIDS, UNESCO works in close partnership with the other nine cosponsors and the UNAIDS Secretariat.
The UNAIDS division of labour on HIV and AIDS falls under 17 technical support areas with a ‘lead organization’ for each, and with the involvement of ‘main partners’.
In addition to its work in technical areas as a main partner, UNESCO is designated as the lead organization for HIV prevention with young people in educational institutions, in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the World Health Organization (WHO).
